Notes: The residential placement rate is the number of female juveniles in residential placement per 100,000 female juveniles age 10 through the upper age of original juvenile jurisdiction in each State. U.S. total excludes youth in tribal facilities but includes 140 female juvenile offenders for whom State of offense was not reported (most of these youth are in private facilities).

To preserve the privacy of the juvenile residents, state cell counts have been rounded to the nearest multiple of three. Rates are based on rounded counts. Detail may not add to total because of rounding.

  • Nationally, the ratio of the residential placement rate for minority females to that for white females was 2 to 1.
  • In 30 states, the placement rate for non-Hispanic black females exceeded the rate for all other race/ethnicity groups.
  • Nationally, the placement rates for females were substantially lower than the corresponding rates for males. For example the overall placement rate for females was 54 per 100,000 female juveniles in the population. In comparison, the placement rate for males was 330 per 100,000 male juveniles.
