Juvenile Arrest Rates for Running Away by Race, 1980-2010

Note: Rates are arrests of persons ages 10-17 per 100,000 persons ages 10-17 in the resident population. Persons of Hispanic ethnicity may be of any race, i.e., white, black, American Indian, or Asian. Arrests of Hispanics are not reported separately.

- More so than for other offenses, the race-specific arrest rates for running away from home are very similar. In 2009, for example, the rates for the four racial groups ranged from 238 to 443 per 100,000 persons ages 10-17.
- By 2009, the juvenile arrest rates for running away were lower than levels observed in 1980 for whites (down 53%), American Indians (52%), and blacks (5%). The rate for Asian juveniles in 2009 was roughly equivalent to its 1980 level.
