This fact sheet provides an overview of findings from the 2009 National Youth Gang Survey. In 2009, based on survey results, there were an estimated 28,100 gangs and 731,000 gang members throughout 3,500 jurisdictions nationwide. Data on the number of gangs, gang members, and gang-related homicides in larger cities, suburban counties, smaller cities, and rural counties are provided to accurately reflect youth gang activity in the United States.
